Advantages and Applications of Metal Control Valves

Introduction to Metal Control Valves

As core final control elements in industrial automation systems, metal control valves utilize metal materials for critical components such as the valve body and sealing elements. They precisely regulate parameters such as fluid flow rate, pressure, and direction, making them widely suitable for demanding industrial conditions involving high temperatures, high pressures, and strong corrosiveness.

Metal control valves consist of two main assemblies: the valve body assembly and the actuator assembly. Actuators provide various driving forces—such as electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic power—and receive control signals from PLCs or DCSs to drive the valve plug or disc. By utilizing linear sliding or 90-degree rotary motion to alter the flow passage area, the valve regulates the flow of the medium, thereby stabilizing parameters within a closed-loop control system.

Why Choose Metal Control Valves?

Valve operating environments are not always mild; selecting a metal control valve is the prudent choice when operating conditions exceed the capabilities of standard non-metallic valves.

Extreme Temperature Conditions

When the medium temperature exceeds 150°C—such as in high-temperature steam networks, petrochemical cracking units, or molten salt energy storage systems—valves with non-metallic seals may suffer from seal aging, deformation, and failure. Conversely, at temperatures below -40°C—such as in air separation units or liquefied natural gas (LNG) pipelines—non-metallic materials are prone to low-temperature brittle fracture.

High-Pressure and High-Differential-Pressure Conditions

In systems with operating pressures of 10 MPa or higher—such as coal slurry pipelines in coal chemical plants or high-pressure hydrogenation units—non-metallic valves often lack sufficient pressure-bearing capacity. Additionally, when the pressure differential across the valve exceeds 4 MPa, the plugs or discs of standard valves are susceptible to erosion damage.

Highly Corrosive and Special Media Conditions

When transporting media such as strong acids, strong alkalis, or aggressive organic solvents—common in the acid-alkali synthesis stages of fine chemical production—non-metallic control valves cannot withstand long-term corrosion.

When the medium contains significant amounts of solid particles or sludge—such as coal slurry in coal chemical processes or sewage sludge in treatment pipelines—the sealing surfaces of soft-seated non-metallic valves can be scratched by particles, leading to leakage.

Key Performance Advantages of Metal Control Valves

Resilience in Extreme Conditions: Constructed from materials such as alloy steel and stainless steel, these valves operate within a temperature range of -269°C to 1430°C and withstand maximum working pressures of up to 1000 MPa.

Long Service Life: Metal-to-metal hard sealing structures offer superior resistance to wear and aging; models featuring shear-seal technology can handle contaminated fluids containing impurities, maintaining leakage rates far lower than non-metal sealed valves during long-term operation.

Strong Customization Capabilities: Material selection, sealing configurations, and actuation methods can be tailored to specific operating conditions, supporting customization for demanding applications such as high-temperature, highly corrosive, and high-pressure hydrogen environments.

Applications of Metal Control Valves

Fluid pipeline control in heavy industries such as petrochemicals, metallurgy, and power generation.

Airflow and flow rate regulation for large-diameter pipelines in water treatment, environmental ventilation, and municipal engineering.

Fine chemical projects requiring high material purity, such as those involving new electrolyte materials and pharmaceuticals.
